Twelve to Go...

Now that you have mastered hello, let's learn good-bye!

Au revoir /ohr-vwah/ (good-bye) - probably the most common way to say good-bye. If you use this alone, you will be fine. But, if you want to get fancy try...
À bientôt /ah-bee-EHN-toh/ (see you soon)
Adieu /ah-dhyou/ (farewell) I had a Frenchwoman tell me that you only use this to say good-bye permanently. Au revoir implies good-bye for now. Adieu you would use one of two ways: 1. to be dramatic (to a no-good boy/girl-friend..."Adieu!" - pair with a door slam or a foot stomp for added flair) or, 2. to les morts (the dead). Her words, not mine. In French, à = to, dieu = God...you get the idea!

So, when we depart for JFK in 12 days, be sure to tell your parents 1. au revoir or 2. à bientôt. However, if you say, 3. adieu, you are NOT allowed on the plane with me! I'm not taking any chances...
